Frederick Hadidi

Founding Partner

I help companies respond to allegations of patent infringement and guide them through the related legal and business risks. This typically includes patent and product analysis, drafting formal opinion letters on validity and infringement, and representing clients in license negotiations.

I’ve been a bassist and a singer for more than 30 years, and since 2012 I have performed at (and written lyrics for) the San Francisco Bay Area Intellectual Property American Inn of Court’s annual June musical (and CLE!) revue.

How I got here

My interests in technology, history, and storytelling began during a school trip to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, which I would later visit dozens of times. This ultimately led me to Cornell, where I majored in electrical engineering and took as many history courses as I could. I decided to go to law school when two professors encouraged me to apply.

After graduating from Stanford Law, I spent years litigating IP cases, drafting patent opinion letters, working on deals, and prosecuting patents at three large law firms: Heller, Ehrman; Pennie & Edmunds; and Skadden, Arps. More than 15 years ago, I founded the group that would later become Chao Hadidi Stark & Barker LLP.

Outside of patent disputes, I have worked on trade secret litigations and conducted internal trade secret investigations, drafted copyright agreements, represented a group of 22 patent prosecution firms and practitioners as amici in Therasense, Inc. v. Becton, Dickinson and Co., and served as pro bono appellate counsel in a successful asylum petition before the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
